Important update – BHA Customers with Radio Teleswitch (RTS) electricity meters please note.
If your home has a Radio Teleswitch (RTS) electricity meter, it’s important for you to note that the technology supporting it will be permanently switched off on 30th June 2025.
After this date, this older metering technology, along with its supporting infrastructure, will be phased out. So, your RTS meter will no longer be able to switch between peak and off-peak rates. This could affect things like your heating, hot water, and electricity bills.
What does this mean for you?
There’s no need to panic. Your electricity supplier will contact you soon, to help you upgrade to a smart meter which will allow you to have added benefits such as accurate bills, smart tariffs, and real-time energy monitoring.
If you’d prefer not to have a smart meter, it’s still really important to contact your supplier as soon as possible, to discuss other available options. This will help ensure you’re all set before the switch-off date – 30th June 2025.
How to know if you have a RTS meter
Here are a few signs to look out for if you’re unsure whether your home has an RTS meter:
- A “Radio Teleswitch” label on a separate switch box near your meter.
- You have electric heating or storage heaters in your home.
- You’re on a cheaper energy plan like Economy 7 or Economy 10.
- Your area has no gas supply
Why is this important to act now?
It’s really important that you upgrade your meter before 30th June 2025 to avoid any last minute challenges or disruptions to your electricity service. Without an upgrade, some households may face issues like losing hot water or heating, and even higher energy bills!
Help spread the word!
If you know someone who may still have an RTS meter, please encourage them to act now—especially if they’re in vulnerable circumstances. This upgrade is essential to keep their energy running smoothly.

I have only just heard about the RTS being stopped on the 30th June 2025, I have had no notification from EON Next with regards to this they even allowed me to change my tariff in November for 12 month. Although RTS is shutting down on the 30th June 2025 how long will it take to phase it out completely. I have read that the Government date for economy 7 and 10 shut down by 2030 which is another 5 years away.
Dear Linda, we’re sorry to hear that you’ve not heard from your utility supplier. We’re aware from wider discussions that some utility suppliers appear to be behind with their roll out of smart meters. Smart meters have been identified as the solution to the RTS switch off.
BHA has been trying to contact the utility suppliers to ensure that our customers are at the top of the list to get smart meters but since we do not own the meters and are not involved in the contract between the energy user and supplier, there is little that we’re able to do to expedite this.
In terms of the final dates for shutdown, the only information we have is what has been announced by Ofgem. https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/information-consumers/energy-advice-households/replacing-your-radio-teleswitch-electricity-meter
